Seven Devils will not be accepting submissions for the 2022 Conference
This was a difficult decision. It was not taken lightly and involved a network of issues (medical, practical, and financial) as well as our commitment to support playwrights and the development of new work. We fully expect to return to the open submission model that has sustained us for more than two decades in 2023.
HOW WILL THE PLAYWRIGHTS FOR THE 2022 CONFERENCE BE SELECTED?
Our 2022 cohort of 6 playwrights will include:
WHAT IS BEHIND THIS DECISION?
In both 2020 and 2021 we planned for in-person Conferences in McCall, Idaho, but were forced by the pandemic to shift online. While the 2021 and 2022 Conferences succeeded in supporting the work of amazing and very worthy plays and playwrights, both Conferences were also based on the optimistic premise that the end of the pandemic (and the return to live theater) was just around the corner.
While we remain optimistic, we cannot deny that the events of these two years have taken their toll on artists and organizations spiritually, artistically, financially, emotionally, and physically. For so many of us, the future (of the American Theater, of new work, of everything) still feels complicated and uncertain. We wanted our 2022 efforts to acknowledge and embrace the need to heal and strengthen ourselves and each other.
The choice to work with alumni playwrights reflects our commitment to support playwrights beyond the Conference period.
