July 17, 1955 was just another sleepy summer night at Becky’s Far Horizons Tavern in the tiny town of Arco, Idaho; until it wasn’t. Becky, the tavern owner, Adam, the nuclear physicist, and Chuck, the Mormon Bishop, need to come to an understanding about the future, and their arguments come to a head at well past closing time. With the arrival of a troubled newcomer who is stranded with a broken-down car, it seems like Becky will never get to go home. Then, with the flickering of lights, Arco becomes the first town in the world to be electrified by nuclear power. It’s hard to feel as if anything has changed, but it’s clear that things will never be the same.
