Why do you charge a submission fee?
We all hate submission fees. While we cannot eliminate our fee, we are very happy to be as transparent as possible about the fee, and where it goes.
Seven Devils doesn't present fully produced work. All work is presented in-process and free of charge, with playwrights retaining all their rights all of the time. This means that unlike producing organizations we don't have earned income from ticket sales. The submission fee has been calculated to cover the cost of continuing to take accept, process and read open submissions.

Where does that submission fee go?
$6 goes directly to a professional reader. Readers are required to reach each script cover to cover and then provides us with a written report.
$2 dollars goes directly to the cost of Submittable and PayPal, both of which are pay services that necessary for us to process the 600+ scripts we receive each year from playwrights around the country.
$2 goes directly towards overseeing the entire admissions process; the time and costs involved with managing 30-40 readers, 600+ scripts and reports over the course of the 9 month submission and selection process each year. Submission fees fund the submission process ONLY. They do not in any way subsidize the cost of the Conference or any other Seven Devils projects.

Why PayPal and Submittable? Why Administrative costs?
For 10 years, 100% of the submission fee went directly to our readers with Seven Devils staff processing scripts and readers reports on a volunteer basis. But as the number of scripts grew, and the need to find and manage an ever-growing team of readers and their reports, the work of maintaining a true open submission process became more than could be managed by a couple of volunteers working without the assistance of programs like Submittable and PayPal.
